UC Berkeley protesters occupy classrooms


BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) --
What started out as a peaceful protest against tuition hikes at UC Berkeley Thursday afternoon turned into a mob scene with police intervening. There was at least one skirmish and by Thursday evening, one classroom remains occupied.




It began as a noon-time protest rally on the other side of the campus. Then, a couple of hundred students marched from Sproul Plaza to this building on the north side of campus.

The protest has been peaceful for the most part; the group is rallying against state budget cuts to California's public college and university system.

"The plan is to stay here until either as a collective we decide to leave or until essentially we are beaten and dragged," graduate student Callie Maidhof said.

Police, for the most, part have stood by and watched, but there was a scuffle between police and protestors as the marchers entered Tolman Hall. Police say a couple of officers were shoved and had to defend themselves.

"Two officers did use pepper spray to defend themselves from the people who were pinning them in," UC Berkeley Police spokesperson Lt. Marc DeCoulode said.

The students describe a different situation, saying that the police manhandled them. The protesters say they plan to stay in the building indefinitely but the group had shrunk to about 40 people by 4 p.m.
