Surfer bitten by shark could be released today


MONTEREY BAY, Calif. (KGO) --
A surfer could soon walk out of a San Jose hospital, just two days after a shark bit him in the neck at a Central California beach.




Twenty-seven-year-old Eric Tarantino was attacked by what he says was a 9-foot shark while surfing with friends at Marina State Beach in Monterey County at approximately 7 a.m. Saturday morning.

They say they hadn't been in the water more than 10 minutes when the shark, possibly a great white, appeared and bit Tarantino on the neck. Surgeons say the bite was just millimeters from his jugular vein and his carotid artery.

Story: Surfer hospitalized after shark attack on Saturday Tarantino's friends say he was able to get on the beach on his own and they helped him once he was on the sand, forming a tourniquet with beach towels. He was then airlifted to Regional Medical Center of San Jose.

Tarantino could be released as early as Monday. His injuries turned out to be non-life threatening.
