Search continues for Cupertino quarry gunman


CUPERTINO, Calif. (KGO) --
The manhunt is continuing today for a cement plant worker accused of a mass workplace shooting. This morning, authorities have shifted their focus away from a Sunnyvale neighborhood near an HP campus.




Overnight, crews used a helicopter with thermal imaging to look for 47-year-old Shareef Allman. A ground search was called off at dark last night and will continue this morning.

View all 13 photos He was last seen at the HP campus in Cupertino around 7 a.m. Wednesday where he tried to carjack a woman. She refused to give him the car and he shot her. She has non-life threatening injuries. An all day search in a nearby Sunnyvale neighborhood turned up nothing.

This all began about 4:30 Wednesday morning when Allman walked into Lehigh Southwest Cement Plant with an assault rifle and a handgun and opened fire. He shot nine people at a meeting, three are dead. The victims are John Robert Vallejos, 51, and Mark Munoz, 59, both of San Jose, and Manuel Guadalupe Pinon, 48, of Newman.

Story: Cupertino shooting not first instance of workplace violence Allman was upset that he had been transferred to the night shift. Someone for the plant said that he had been repeatedly showing up late and he had more accidents than anyone else had at the plant in 20 years.

Friends of Allman's said they had no idea that this was coming.

"Shareef has too much to live for. For him to snap like this is totally out of character for as long as I've known him," said Allman's friend Mitchell Julian.

Allman's car was recovered at a gas station at Wolfe and Homestead. Authorities also recovered two assault rifles, a shotgun and a handgun. Sherriff's officials have surveillance video of Allman walking away from his car with a rifle at the gas station.

Cupertino Union, Santa Clara Unified, and the Fremont Union High School Districts will return to normal schedules today. Many of the schools in those districts operated in lockdown mode yesterday. Parents are advised to check their district's websites for updates as the manhunt continues.
