Police in San Jose shoot armed man

SAN JOSE (KGO) --
A San Jose officer shot and killed a man with a gun this morning after responding to reports of gunfire in the neighborhood. This is the fourth officer involved shooting in less than two weeks in Santa Clara County.

Police said they expect things to get even more violent -- pointing to the fact that 3,000 to 4,000 parolees will soon be released here, they say that won't help matters.

The man was shot and killed on Hillcrest near Narvaez around six this morning. But they think his criminal activity started up on Communications Hill about 30 minutes before he was shot. There were reports of gunfire on Casolino Drive. It appears the bullets all hit a parked white Nissan. That was at 5:30 -- it was 6:00 when police were called about a suspicious man on Hillcrest.

The man was shot and killed in a residential area -- full of apartment buildings and houses.

"I heard screeching noises and all I heard was gunshots and then it stopped and I was like uh oh. Then we just heard the cops, the sirens going off. Yeah it was pretty crazy," said Brandilyn Montuya of San Jose.

The crime scene created quite a bit of confusion during the busy morning hours. The man was shot right in front of the Central County Occupational Center - a continuation school that had to be shut down for the day. But many students didn't get the word until they got here.

"Wow that's crazy guess I'm not going to school today," said student Misty DelGado.

This is the fourth officer involved shooting in San Jose this month, the fifth one of the year. Police say this just illustrates how dangerous their job is.

"We're not going to expect that officer to do anything less than he needs to do to go home to his family -- to the extent that he is being confronted by an armed suspect. I don't know if there is anything else that he could have done," said Sgt. Dwyer.

Police haven't said what this man's motive was to shoot up the car and then walk around with his gun. They also haven't said who he is. They're still notifying his family. They hope to release those details later today.
