Layoff notices going out to Oakland employees


OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) --
Pink slips are going out to Oakland city employees today as a result of a massive loss in a specific type of state funding.




There are 1,500 full time employees and 1,000 part time employees who are expected to get layoff notices today that they could be let go in two weeks.

On January 25, the council will consider which jobs to eliminate. On January 31, the decision will be made on which 200 jobs will be eliminated. The cuts are happening because the state has taken away $25 million to $30 million in redevelopment agency money.

"The city and the employees have been through layoffs a lot in the last three years since the recession started. So I think there's a lot of fatalism now and resignation that if your numbers up, your numbers up," said city employee Adrian Roe.

No police officers are expected to be impacted by this. The Public Works department is expected to be hit hard.
