Hikers' friends rejoice at news of their release

MUSCAT, Oman (KGO) --
After more than two years, two Americans convicted of spying in Iran finally gained their freedom Wednesday. Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal flew in a private jet from Iran to the gulf state of Oman where their families were waiting. Reaction to Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal's release at their alma mater UC Berkeley is elation.

Friends of Bauer and Fattal say they sometimes wondered if this day would ever come.

"No more roller coaster, no more games, we can breathe a sigh of relief because they're coming home soon, they should be back in the United States within the next few days and I cannot wait to see them," friend Liam O'Donoghue said.

Story: 'Next Iranian move' awaited on jailed Americans One year after Sarah Shourd was freed from an Iranian prison, her fellow hikers Bauer and Fattal arrived at the same airport in Oman and into the waiting arms of family members.

UC Berkeley journalism professor Ken Light is a former instructor of Bauer.

"I think your first reaction is, 'Really? Is this really happening?'" Light said. "I think we've been holding out for the last month like yo-yos, you know, 'They're getting out tomorrow, they may get out, they're not getting out, it's changed, the president says it's going to happen, the mullahs say no&"

It's unclear when or if the hikers will return to the Bay Area. They haven't lived here for some time, though Shourd has told a friend she would be happy to move back her with Bauer, her fiancé.
