But there will be no repeat of the crowded, and potentially calamitous, bridge walk that took place at the 50th birthday celebration. During that event, which closed the bridge to traffic but opened it to people, pets and bicycles, so many people crowded onto the roadways and sidewalks that they created the span's worst-ever congestion - and flattened the bridge deck's slight arching shape. Bridge and public safety officials say it was fortunate that nobody was seriously injured.

"There was a sea of humanity on the roadway and sidewalks, and we don't want to create a situation in which people can't move like that again," said Denis Mulligan, bridge general manager.

Instead, bridge officials and civic leaders announced Monday, they plan to keep the attention on the Golden Gate, but lure the crowds away, where they can admire it from a safe distance. They'll do that with a two-day waterfront festival that will stretch from Fort Point beneath the bridge across Crissy Field and Marina Green, and down Fisherman's Wharf to Pier 39.

"We think there will be enough activities going on that people won't want to miss," Mulligan said. "If you have a great party somewhere else, maybe people won't want to come and walk on the bridge that day."

The committee planning the celebration of the bridge, which opened to traffic on May 28, 1937, includes officials from the bridge district, the Presidio Trust, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and Giants President Larry Baer. It had already announced plans for a yearlong celebration featuring 75 civic tributes by community groups - ranging from photo contests and dance performances to nature hikes and art projects.

Also announced were plans to improve the rather minimal visitor experience at the south end of the bridge with construction of a visitors center and the transformation of the roundhouse from a gift shop to a starting point for guided tours, which will be offered during the day and at night, as well as an improved network of trails and interpretive signs and exhibits.

Frank Dean, Golden Gate National Recreation Area superintendent, said that when the bridge opened, there were military installations on both ends and public access was limited. Today, however, the span lands in national parkland, and deserves a better area to welcome the 10 million visitors it draws annually.

"A lot of those visitors never even knew they were in a national park," he said. "We need to go where the people are going."

Heydon Churchill and Yolanda Logan, 23-year-old bike-riding visitors from Australia, said more visitor displays would be a welcome addition.

"Every bit of information you can get without having to ask someone is good," he said.

Since the financially strapped bridge district doesn't use toll revenue to pay for educational displays - or birthday parties - the 75th anniversary is a perfect chance for the park service and the conservancy to step in and help build a better experience for visitors, said Greg Moore, executive director of the conservancy.

"We are all making our own anniversary gift to the bridge with the improvements that will happen here," he said of project, which is being paid for with private donations.
