E. Palo Alto considers suing Facebook over expansion


EAST PALO ALTO, Calif. (KGO) --
Concerned East Palo Alto city council members will meet Thursday to consider possibly suing Facebook over its expansion plans.




The mayor of East Palo Alto told ABC7 she met with Facebook Tuesday morning to discuss her concerns. She the meeting will be just one in a series of meetings. She said it was important that Facebook does what it can to make sure its move to its new campus is beneficial to both the community and the company, but city leaders do recognize that there are also a lot of positives to having Facebook in their city.

"We're excited that an internationally-known corporation like Facebook is moving into our neighborhood," said council member Carlos Romero.

Story: Facebook moves into new Menlo Park home today City officials hope Facebook's move will bring jobs and other positive impacts to their residents as well, but the enormity of Facebook also concerns them. The corporation hopes to have 94,000 employees by 2018.

"Certainly the traffic impacts, there may be some housing impacts related to increases in housing prices, some displacement of tenants maybe. We want to look into all that," Romero said.

East Palo Alto City Attorney Kathleen Kane will present what options the city council has in its negotiations with Facebook at a closed-door session on Thursday. One option includes the possibility of suing Facebook.

"My main concern is that I wanted it to be clear that when it's listed as potential litigation, it is potential. That's something that we're talking about. It's not pending, which means that there's nothing that's been filed yet," Kane explained. "So, it's something that's still open for discussion at the council level."

City council members realize that that option is on the table, but at this point, they say they do not think they are going to have to go that route.

"I don't think anyone, in either East Palo Alto or from any other jurisdiction that may be affected at this point, is talking about any type of lawsuit," Romero said.

City leaders say so far, Facebook has been responsive, cooperative, and listening to their concerns. Facebook has not returned phone calls from ABC7 News for comment.
