Concord officials say oil spill odors not toxic


CONCORD, Calif. (KGO) --
Health officials are warning Concord residents to keep their windows and doors shut tight after an oil spill left people feeling very sick Monday night.




The sulfuric rotten egg smell still lingered strongly Tuesday morning. Officials say the light headedness some people have felt is most likely just the body's reaction to the smell and not anything toxic in the air. Residents still bothered by the stench are advised to stay indoors or get out of the area.

This all happened after a crude oil pipeline at the Concord Naval Weapons Station spilled Monday, at one point, leaking about 10 gallons of oil a minute. The pipeline has been shut down and is no longer leaking. Officials say they do not expect any oil to contaminate any water sources. Nonetheless, the smell is a very unpleasant side effect that has residents wondering what is going on.

Story: Pungent smell worries residents in Concord "If you do get big strong odors, you may want to air out your homes to get the odors out," said Randy Sawyer with Contra Costa County Health Services. "We don't expect any health effects from these odors. People may feel some transient health effects like headaches and nausea, just from strong odors."

Conoco Phillips owns the pipeline and says its crews worked overnight putting tarps and dirt over the oil in an attempt to beat back the smell. They have no estimate of when the smell will be gone. There is also no word on what caused the leak.
