College student shot, killed in Richmond

RICHMOND, Calif. (KGO) --
Richmond police are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a car killing a college student late Monday night. The victim's sister narrowly escaped the shooting which happened right outside their home.

Police say that as far as they can tell, the victim was not involved in any gang or drug activity. They do not think he knows his killer. Police and neighbors of murder victim Edwin Martinez agree that he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

"No, he was just out there to be out there. He got caught up in the wrong time," one neighbor told ABC7.

"We don't have any indication that he was picked out particularly. We're still asking for help from the public in regards to this incident," Det. Nicki Abetkov said.

Investigators say the 22-year-old Contra Costa College student was in the car with his sister, parked in front of their apartment complex at 7:00 Monday night, when someone came running down the street chasing after a car and shooting at it. When the man gave up and stopped running, he turned and saw Martinez and his sister sitting in their car. He fired and shot Martinez several times.

"He was my neighbor, one of my friends," a neighbor said. "His life was cut too short. That's cold what they did."

The neighborhood, Nevin and 22nd in Richmond, was on edge Tuesday morning.

"I feel bad for the young man and his sister& feel bad for the neighborhood because too much of that type of thing goes on around here," another neighbor said.

One man named J.C. went over right away Tuesday morning to check on his mom who watches his kids for him during the day.

"My concern is that when I bring my kids over, I want to know where they're coming," he said.

People are especially concerned because the killer is still on the loose.

"We don't have any information about a suspect right now. The description that we have is very vague," Abetkov said.

Police say all they have to go on is that a man was seen running from the area. They need help and they are hoping that someone with some key information or details will come forward.
