Clean up begins after Cupertino apt. fire


CUPERTINO, Calif. (KGO) --
The long clean up has begun in Cupertino after a devastating fire raced through an apartment complex Saturday night.




It happened at the Village Green Apartments, where intense flames burned to the roof of several units. This sort of thing is always a tragedy, but somehow it is even worse when it happens over the Thanksgiving weekend. Shimon Vexler says most of the things in his home are virtually unrecognizable. He is most disappointed the fire destroyed his guitar and photo albums.

"Also, there was a book that my daughter started to write when she was 17 and I'm not sure we can find it anymore," he added. The three-alarm fire gutted or did extensive damage to eight two-bedroom units. Another eight units also suffered from fire, water or smoke damage. The fire's epicenter is a stove where a pan of cooking oil was left on and forgotten. Fortunately, by Monday night, some 60 people, forced out of their homes do have a place to stay.

Families are salvaging what they can, but many are still in a daze.

"I am just trying to settle down, somehow. It's like a big shock," Nagesh Nagaraj said.

Fire investigators estimate the damage to the building alone will top $2 million. Those that had it, are singing the praises of rental insurance. Agents were scattered about the property Monday to start the claims process. One family victimized by the fire did not have insurance and neighbors are now doing everything they can to help.

"They only moved in about a month ago from Korea, and they're not even used to this country, and this disaster happened to them," one man said.

Shimon says he is grateful no one was hurt. He says firefighters worked hard to make sure the fire did not do even more damage.

"Even though I lost all of my belongings, I forever will remember, emotionally, their help and dedication to help. It's beyond the call of duty in my view," he said.

Management at the Village Green is waiting to see just how soon some of those families can return to the units that only suffered minor smoke damage. They would like to rebuild, but that could take several months depending on engineering and permitting.
