Cable for new span of Bay Bridge to be placed


BAY BRIDGE (KGO) --
Today, crews will begin installing the first strand of the massive suspension cable on the new east span of the Bay Bridge.




The 2,047-foot-long Self-Anchored Suspension Span is the signature element of the new span. The cable will follow the path of the orange cable catwalks that have been in place for months. Placing the first strand is expected to take two days.

The cable will act as a giant sling; it will anchor at the east end of the roadway, travel up and over the tower and then loop around the west end before heading back to the east end.
