49ers stadium opponents throwing 'Hail Mary'

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) --
A group of opponents are throwing up a "Hail Mary" to stop a planned 49ers stadium in Santa Clara. The decision on a new 49er stadium is coming down to the wire and a group of citizens are trying to scuttle the deal.

In Santa Clara, petitioners are up against a wave of supporters for the stadium. Just when it looked like the 49ers move to Santa Clara was a done deal, the opposition is coming out with a new strategy.

"We want to put it back out to vote because we're disputing the contract and the financing," one woman told ABC7. Volunteers with Santa Clara Plays Fair, a group opposed to the stadium deal, are gathering signatures. They are promising to be in front of the SaveMart on El Camino every day until January 19. They need 6,000 signatures for a ballot measure to reject a city contract to develop the $1 billion stadium. Last month, Santa Clara's Stadium Authority approved a plan to use an $850 million loan to fund the development.

Story: Santa Clara debates loan to 49ers for stadium However, just a few feet away from Santa Clara Plays Fair, stadium supporters had their own message to get out.

"The taxes that will come from building the stadium and the jobs it creates will go back into the community," one man said.

Members of IBEW Local 332 passed out flyers saying "Stop. Think before you sign the petition." Labor unions need the stadium deal to go through for its members' survival. Many are counting on the construction work and on Saturday, the union paid some unemployed members to pass out flyers against the referendum.

"It's just going to prolong what the voters have already voted for and what the Stadium Authority has approved," union member Sal Venture said.

Resident Cheryl Gordon says, "That's the vote and we should stay with that vote."

Others disagree.

"We think it's too expensive project and we don't know what all the ramifications for the city's finances are going to be," Claire Hawley says.

Many accuse the city of changing the terms of the deal after Measure J was passed in 2010. The project will use no more than $40 million of the city's redevelopment money. The rest will come from a hotel tax, the 49ers, and the Stadium Authority's loan. The team also promises to back the loan just in case of an emergency.

If the signatures are gathered, it could go back for a re-vote as soon as June. A Santa Clara city spokesperson said Saturday that city leaders welcome the effort and will honor the decision of the voters.
