1-year-old remains in critical condition after shooting


OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) --
Two people including a toddler remain in critical condition after a shootout in Oakland last night. A total of eight people were shot and police today are on alert for retaliation.




Police said there were lots of people who witnessed the shooting, but so far not many have stepped forward to help investigators.

A surveillance video shows three gunmen coming into the picture in the upper right hand part of the screen and firing away. Some of the people in harm's way scatter; some are hit and at least one person can be seen on the ground firing back. Police say several returned fire.

Story: 1-year-old in critical condition after Oakland shooting "There was some type of argument that ensued and during the argument shots were exchanged between multiple individuals," said Johnna Watson of the Oakland Police.

This morning in the parking lot of State Market Liquors at 7th and Willow Streets, blood stains remain - 14 hours after the 6 p.m. shooting. And one neighbor who didn't want her face shown says she expects more shootings.

"I think they are going to retaliate. These people are not really thinking right now; whatever happens, happens," said a the neighbor.

Police say the shooting happened during the taping of a rap music video by Kafani. Kafani says he wasn't there, and police thought he had been because a van with his picture on the side was in the parking lot. He said it's owned by his promoters.

"I don't know whether they were shooting a video, or rather if the video was finished or what. I don't know about that. I was at the studio. All I know was I started getting twits that I was shot or something like that and it was just going crazy," said Kafani.

All eight victims were brought to hospitals by private vehicles including the van with Kafani's picture on it. When police got to the scene, there were no suspects, no victims and not much cooperation from witnesses.

"We are asking anyone who has information regarding this shooting to please come forward. We do know that there were a lot of people out here this evening and there are a lot of people who may have information that can assist the Oakland police department with this investigation," said Watson.

The 1-year-old boy shooting victim has been identified as Hiram Lawrence. He was shot in the head while in his father's arms last night. His second birthday is next month. A relative said that he has made it through surgery and is moving a little bit.

Hiram's father was shot in the hand. The other shooting victims are expected to be OK, except for one woman who is in critical condition.

Investigators who stopped by the hospital said they are not any closer to making arrests.

Oakland's police chief has scheduled a news conference about the shooting at 1 p.m..
